PRK, or Photo Refractive Keratectomy, is another form of Laser Vision Correction. PRK uses the same laser and the same measurements as LASIK; however, unlike LASIK where a flap is made to enable the laser to deliver treatment to the middle layers of the cornea, the PRK laser treatment is applied to the top layer of the cornea. Both LASIK and PRK give the same excellent end results. Because PRK involves more healing time, LASIK has become the more popular choice for refractive surgeons.
PRK is occasionally the preferred method of correcting one's vision due to factors such as having a cornea that is too "thin" or too "curved" for LASIK. When all of the critical measurements are taken at the pre-operative examination, the physician will discuss which of the two procedures, PRK or LASIK, is the right choice.
