Cataracts

Cataract surgery is recommended when blurred vision from a cataract interferes with your normal activities such as night driving, watching TV, reading, sewing, or recognizing faces. The development of a cataract is not, in itself, an indication for surgery. Your doctor will discuss with you the results of any testing done and advise cataract surgery when it would be beneficial for you. Cataract surgery is an elective procedure which can take place when a person needs or wants better vision.

New technology is constantly improving cataract surgery here at The Eye Center. Current state-of-the-art cataract surgery has dramatically improved the entire experience for patients. The “clear corneal” incisions are only three and a half millimeters long, require no stitches, and are so subtle that they frequently can barely be seen with our high-powered clinical microscopes. We use ultrasound, called phacoemulsification, to liquefy and remove the cloudy lens from the eye. A lens implant is then inserted to restore and improve the focal power of the eye. The procedure is completed in only six to ten minutes and typically leaves people fascinated by their new and improved eye sight, restoring confidence and vigor to their lifestyle.

The lens implant, an intraocular lens (IOL), is a man-made lens which is placed inside the eye after the clouded natural lens (cataract) has been removed. Technicians measure the length and curvature of the eye preoperatively to aid the surgeon’s selection of the IOL power. Again, new technology is an advantage. The IOL Master simplifies the procedure and makes it ten times more accurate than previous methods. The result is better vision and happier patients. The IOL becomes a permanent correction for the eye and needs no care. Once in position, the IOL should last the patient’s lifetime.

With the combination of small incisions and the modern intraocular lens, very little recuperation is necessary after cataract surgery. You may resume most normal activities the day following surgery. Cataract surgery is the number one surgical procedure performed in all of medicine, and it is the most successful. Of the one million plus cataract operations which were performed last year in our country, over 95% resulted in restored vision.
