Blepharoplasty, commonly called eyelid surgery, is a procedure that removes excess skin, fat, and muscle from the upper or lower eyelids. It’s often done to reduce drooping lids or under-eye bags, improving both vision and appearance. At The Eye Center of Southern Indiana in Bloomington, IN, patients receive expert care from a team experienced in both clinical and surgical eye care.
Right after your treatment, swelling, bruising, and a slight facial tightness around the eyes are to be anticipated. Patients can normally see and roam about within a day or two, but they prefer to lie down with the head raised to limit swelling. Cold compresses and medications from your doctor might reduce inflammation and help it heal.
Your care team will give you some instructions on cleansing the incision site, avoiding heavy exercise, and monitoring for the presence of complications. Most people can go home the day of surgery and do not require strong pain medication.
By the first week, bruising and swelling typically have peaked and are starting to settle. Patients are mostly recovered enough to resume light activities between 5 and 7 days, although bruising may still be visible.
Most of the swelling is gone, and stitches, if used, have likely been taken out by the second week. Patients are usually well enough to return to work and social activity.
Over the next few weeks, they will improve. All the remaining puffiness and redness disappear gradually, and the eyelids settle into their new natural contour.
While you’ll likely feel much better within the first couple of weeks, it can take up to two or three months for final results to fully develop. Scars from the incision are usually very fine and hidden in the natural folds of the eyelids, becoming nearly invisible over time.
